Transportation and passenger safety remain central issues in American policy at the state and federal levels. As lawmakers consider a new five-year surface transportation reauthorization- a broad package that includes new safety requirements- policy professionals can examine the success of industry-led initiatives that ensure public safety and allow for technological innovation.

This briefing will explore industry-based safety enforcement in rail and air, emerging policy proposals, regulatory priorities, and the evolving transportation policy landscape.  Speakers will discuss existing safety standards in the transportation industry and highlight how industry initiatives like the self-regulatory models of the Association of American Railroads and International Air Transport Association are effective in complementing legislative and regulatory efforts.

Featured Speakers:

  • Howard Smith, Executive Director, Center for Industry Self-Regulation

  • Mike Rush, Senior Vice President for Safety and Operations, American Association of Railroads
